Cladonia cervicornis (Ach.) Flot.
subsp. verticillata (Hoffm.) Ahti
Podetia cup-like, the cups proliferating from the centre to form tiers, i.e. one cup inside another, soredia absent, basal squamules entire or shallowly lobed, lobes rounded, bluish green when fresh, white beneath, not curled upwards when dry; apothecia small, brown, on the margins of the cups. In heathland, in rock crevices, on drystone walls, etc., widespread but local.

Van Herk & Aptroot (see above) consider this a separate species from C. cervicornis, as C. verticillata (Hoffm.) Schaer., and regard the characters of the basal squamules, rather than the extent of the proliferation of the podetia, as diagnostic. I agree, but for the moment on this site follow the treatments of James, in Smith et al., and Dobson (refs. above). |
