Arthonia apotheciorum (A.Massal.) Almq.
(= Arthonia clemens auct.)
Lacks a thallus or its own photobiont (and arguably a "lichen" only as a member of a generally lichenised genus), occurs in the hymenium of species of the Lecanora dispersa group, notably Lecanora albescens, taking over and blackening the apothecia. Ascospores 1-septate (compare A. varians). Widespread, probably frequent but sparsely recorded.
Refs: Smith et al. (2009), 158; Purvis et al. (1992), 79 (as A. clemens). |
